Building a Static Page with Hybrid News Theme in Wordpress
?reate a site with a static page and more with the Hybrid News Theme.
The Hybrid Theme, developed originally by Justin Tadlock, opens doors to a variety of possible layouts - all easy to change and to adapt through child themes. In this article, Linda shows how to create a site with a static page and more with the Hybrid News Theme.
Hybrid Theme Tweaking
The beauty in the Hybrid Theme and in the Hybrid News Theme (which actually is a child theme for Hybrid) is that you can make changes to the overall picture without tweaking CSS or any coded pages. First, I'll walk you through Hybrid, then the Hybrid News Theme tweaks
Hybrid Theme Tweaks
Go to "Appearance > Hybrid" in your WP dashboard. You'll see the following page:
Go to "General Settings," where you can select to have the theme
automatically include a print stylesheet (recommended) and to add an alternate
feed address if you already have one set up. If you don't have a feed address
already, don't worry – the Hybrid base theme will create one for you. You may
or may not want to add the category, tag, search and author feeds to your
alternate feed address. If you are using the SEO plugin (which is not necessary
with Hybrid or Hybrid News, and I'll explain why in a later article), then you
can select the next button to disable the theme's meta and indexing features if
you desire.
Now, for the footer settings...this is a brilliant addition. Notice the code in the box. This is how it looks on the current site I'm working on:
If you want to change any information on your footer (your
site would show your site name and the same information in the second
sentence), then you have the option to do so in that Hybrid tweak. Note that
the code in that box is using stylesheet information. I would not change that
information, as those changes would be made in the stylesheet itself. So, if
you want to change colours, etc., please be patient – that tutorial will come a
bit later.
But, if you want to change the information in the second sentence (and you will, later), then you can. The change that you will most want to make is the "child-link" option, as I will take you down that road in the next article. In that tutorial, I'll show you how to build a child theme from a child theme, making Hybrid News your own (that is when you can change the colours in that footer).
When you finalize those changes, head to the Hybrid News link in Settings, just above the Hybrid link.
