Building a Static Page with Hybrid News Theme in Wordpress
?reate a site with a static page and more with the Hybrid News Theme.
The Hybrid Theme, developed originally by Justin Tadlock, opens doors to a variety of possible layouts - all easy to change and to adapt through child themes. In this article, Linda shows how to create a site with a static page and more with the Hybrid News Theme.
Front Page Template for Hybrid News
Follow the steps below to create a new page for the Front Page template:
1.Go to your WP back end and to the left sidebar to click on the link for "Pages > Add New."
2.When the New Page template shows up, name it "Front Page" (without the quotes).
3.Publish that page WITHOUT CONTENT.
4.You will note that this page will show up in your Hybrid News menu at the top of the page on the home page...don't worry – that link will go away shortly.
5.Now, you will add this Front Page template to your menu for the static page.
6.In the same "Add Page" area in the right column, you'll see a menu called, "Attributes." Go to the second drop-down menu named "Template" and click on that menu to see all the pages you can use for front page templates. You should see the template for "Front Page." Click on that template and then click on the "Update Page" button located immediately above that "Attributes" menu (image shown below).
Finally, go back to "Settings > Reading," where you will click on the "static page" radio button and then choose your template again. This time, you should have two choices: "About" and "Front Page." Click on the latter option.
When I committed to the Front Page template for the static page, the site then looked like this:
Note that the blog entry is the message on the front page, but
that will change when content is added. Note that the "front page" option in
the top menu has disappeared...this occurred when I made the "Front Page" a
template option for the home page, so now I do not need to worry about that
page showing up in the menu at top.
Now, you might be interested in how the Hybrid News Theme works...but first you must add content. This is why I suggested that you have content ready for your new site back in the first article of the WordPress series for DMXzone...without content, the Hybrid News Theme option – even as a static front page – is fairly worthless.
Since my client is human, we don't have content yet. But, never fear, as there are a few more steps you need to take with the Hybrid Theme as well as with the Hybrid News Theme to make them viable for your site.
