Apple's OS X 10.8.1 Released

Generally when Apple releases a major upgrade to OS X, it quickly follows with an update to tackle some of the immediate and outstanding bugs with the software. The time frame for this update has been between 13 days (for Snow Leopard) to 26 days (for Lion), and while Mountain Lion has gone for about a month so far in its initial release, the first update is now available and addresses pertinent problems with Thunderbolt audio noise and Mail accounts not working, among other issues.

Microsoft Unveils its New Logo

Microsoft has just unveiled a new look and feel to its corporate logo. Following 25 years from its former iteration, this is the first major Microsoft logo change in the company's history. The new logo includes a multicolored symbol that's typically found on the company's Windows products — the first time the wordmark has been accompanied by an image. Microsoft's Jeff Hansen revealed that the new logo is designed to signal the heritage but also signal the future — a newness and freshness.

YouTube Brings Skippable Ads to Mobile Devices

YouTube will now let people viewing clips on the site by way of their mobile devices skip video ads after 5 seconds, the same way they can when watching clips on a desktop or laptop computer. The TrueView ads - launched for PCs in December of 2010 - are heading to smartphones and tablets. Under TrueView, advertisers pay only when someone chooses to watch a complete ad. But does this ever happen? According to YouTube it does. Google unit noted late last year that 15 percent to 45 percent of viewers on desktops and laptops were indeed opting to let ads play out.

If you are dicing with the idea of going out and purchasing the fabulous new Windows 8 operating system from Microsoft, then it could be worthwhile getting on board with it earlier rather than later. Microsoft is planning on offering the Windows 8 Pro version at an initial promotional price point of $69.99 for early adopters, with the price finally increasing to $199 when that promotion comes to an end on January 31st 2013.

Chrome OS Gets Updated With Smaller Apps List

Chromebook and Chromebox users (and anyone else using Chrome OS) have an update waiting for them that offers several usability improvements. Before you go check for the update, however, take note of what's changed: most notably, the updated OS features a smaller apps list that pops up from the taskbar. Whereas the old apps list introduced in the Aura update reminded us of OS X's Launchpad, the update turns the apps list into a Stacks-like window.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced that it has opened registration for its Windows 8 upgrade promotion. Anyone who purchased a Windows 7 machine after June 2nd of this year can register from now until January 31st of next year to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $14.99 — if you miss the registration period, you'll have to pay full price for the new software when it comes out.

McDonald's Tests PayPal Payments in Mobile App Trial

McDonald's is testing a new payment system that could allow customers to purchase their meals using mobile devices. According to Reuters, 30 restaurants in France are involved in the trial, which sees customers payments processed by eBay's payment arm, PayPal. The concept was demonstrated at a McDonald's conference in Orlando, Florida, earlier this year as part of a booth featuring technology expected to go live in the next couple of years.

Chrome Hacking Contest Award Fund Jumps to $2M

Google announced that it will pay up to $2 million for major vulnerabilities in its Chrome browser at a second Pwnium hacking contest this fall. Pwn2Own, a rival contest sponsored by Hewlett-Packard, will award as much as $200,000 in a mobile-specific challenge slated to run several weeks earlier. Google's Pwnium 2 will take place at the Hack In The Box security conference on Oct. 10 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
