59% Of All Android Tablet Usage Comes From The U.S.

Android tablets have nearly caught up to iPad devices as the world’s most popular tablet platform, and some project that they may even overtake iPads later this year. According to new research from app analytics company Localytics, the U.S., and specifically Amazon, should take the most credit for that trend: some 59% of all Android tablet usage came from the U.S., with over half of that attributed to Kinde Fire and Fire HD tablets, working out to a 33% share.

Next-Gen Video Format H.265 Is Approved

The ITU has approved a new video format that could bring 4k video to future broadband networks, while also making streaming HD video available even on bandwidth-constrained mobile networks. The H.265 standard, also informally known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), is designed to provide high-quality streaming video, even on low-bandwidth networks.

WordPress 3.5.1 Security and Maintenance Update

WordPress 3.5.1 was released, a security and maintenance related update that is recommended to be installed as soon as possible on all live sites running on WordPress. According to the blog post over at the official WordPress blog, 37 bugs were fixed in this release including four security issues and a couple of stability related issues.

Azure-Based Video Streaming Service Goes Live

Microsoft continues to expand its cloud offerings with the general availability of Windows Azure Media Services, which lets enterprises skip building their own infrastructure for streaming on-demand video. The service, released Tuesday, can be used to deliver training videos to employees; stream video content from a website; or build video-on-demand service similar to Hulu or Netflix.

Google Updates Image Search to be Faster

Google announced that it is revamping its image search to make it speedier and more reliable. Soon, people will be able to simultaneously see images and image information while searching for photos, illustrations, and graphics. Google Images Associate Product Manager Hongyi Li wrote in a blog post that based on feedback from both users and webmasters, they redesigned Google Images to provide a better search experience.

Beware of Fake Java Updates

Following recent security vulnerabilities in Java, malware developers are taking a new approach to exploit the Java platform by issuing false updates that pose as legitimate updates for the runtime. The latest version of the Java runtime that fixes recent vulnerabilities is update 11, and Kaspersky labs is reporting that a new malware is out that poses as Java Update 11. The malware is packaged in a Java archive file called javaupdate11.jar that contains two Windows-based executables called up1.exe and up2.exe. When installed the programs open a back door to a command and control server.

Surface Pro Sales Begin on February 9th

The full Windows 8 tablet, which made its behind-the-scenes debut in Las Vegas during CES, has been awaited since last year's Los Angeles Surface event. Originally expected in late January and 90 days after the launch of the Surface RT on October 26, the launch window has shifted a little. Still, it's on its way in two weeks. Panos Panay, Microsoft Surface general manager, made the announcement.

Google Looks to Ditch Passwords

Google engineers are testing new tools that could replace passwords as the primary way of authenticating identity on the web. Google is currently running a pilot that uses a YubiKey cryptographic card developed by Yubico — a startup operated out of Sweden and the US, which has produced a two-factor authentication fob that can emit encrypted one-time passwords to NFC-enabled smartphones.

Samsung Mobile Head Confirms 8-inch Galaxy Note

An 8-inch Samsung Galaxy Note no longer exists solely in the realm of unicorns and Apple TVs. A Korean news site is reporting that Samsung mobile honcho JK Shin has confirmed plans to release a midsize version of the tablet. Samsung's game plan of late seems to be to cover all bases, with a wide array of smartphones and tablets that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and price points. An 8-inch Galaxy Note to continue the trend could debut at February's Mobile World Congress.

IE10 for Windows 7 Nears Final Release

Officially, IE10 on Windows 7 remains in Release Preview, a build that debuted Nov. 13, 2012. At the time, Computerworld speculated that a final release would occur before the end of 2012, basing its estimate on the development timetable for IE9. Instead, the browser will apparently launch in 2013. IE10's public feedback website (requires log-in using a Microsoft account) - contains a wide variety of bug reports, hinting that Microsoft still has work to do before shipping a final version.
