Using the Media Library in WordPress
Leverage the WordPress image libraries so you don't overload your site
Now that you know the basics behind uploading images and using them to gain SEO traction, you might want to know how to leverage the WordPress image libraries so you don't overload your site.
Tips for Naming Images
You probably know by now that naming images is an important process. Now you know that it's even more important to apply an appropriate name to an image so that you can find it easily in a WP Media Library or Gallery. And, you may know that there are other tricks to naming images (or Web pages, etc.) that can help you to avoid trouble down the road. In fact, you may have clients who name images or Web pages with frustrating spaces and other objects that mess up an SEO process.
Whether or not you're seeking high rankings in a search engine, naming your images appropriately is good for mankind in general. Do the following (and you can pass this information on to your clients, too):
Make sure the file name for your images or for your Web pages contains no spaces, apostrophes, slashes or other non-alphanumeric characters (such as $, % and &). Rename the file before uploading or before publishing if it does. The reason behind the elimination of spaces and undue marks is to make those images server-friendly. In addition, naming the image or Web page with appropriate names makes them more user-friendly. To preserve readability, you can use underscores or dashes, such as My_File.jpg or My_Page.html; alternately: My-file.jpg or My-Page.html.
Linda Goin
Linda Goin carries an A.A. in graphic design, a B.F.A. in visual communications with a minor in business and marketing and an M.A. in American History with a minor in the Reformation. While the latter degree doesn't seem to fit with the first two educational experiences, Linda used her 25-year design expertise on archaeological digs and in the study of material culture. Now she uses her education and experiences in social media experiments.
Accolades for her work include fifteen first-place Colorado Press Association awards, numerous fine art and graphic design awards, and interviews about content development with The Wall St. Journal, Chicago Tribune, Psychology Today, and L.A. Times.
