Apple Releases Safari 5.1.7, Snow Leopard Updates, and More

Accompanying yesterday's updates for OS X Lion client and server, Apple has released a number of other updates for its supported operating systems and OS X software. The first is a security update for Snow Leopard, which applies similar security updates for its components that were applied to Lion in the OS X 10.7.4 update. Apple has a knowledge base page on the security details of this update, but as of this writing the page is not loading from the Apple support site.

Apple Releases iOS 5.1.1; Addresses Three Safari Vulnerabilities

Apple yesterday released iOS 5.1.1 (build 9B206, 54.4 MB) for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The new iOS contains a number of security fixes according to Apple knowledgebase article HT5278, including Safari vulnerabilities that allow maliciously crafted websites to be able to spoof the address in the location bar, execute cross-site scripting attacks and cause unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

MasterCard Introduces PayPass Wallet - Buy Things Everywhere

At a press conference at CTIA in New Orleans, MasterCard introduced PayPass Online, a version of its PayPass service that lets you buy things using your smartphone, or with a single click on the web. The system sounds like Amazon's "One-Click Buy" extended to other sites, or like PayPal — you have a single, secure login in MasterCard's system, and can use it to shop on any site.

The company is also giving a date for the launch of its Creative Cloud distribution platform — May 11th. Dolby Audio to be Built into all Windows 8 Versions After All

Dolby Laboratories warned shareholders last August that its audio/DVD playback technologies were unlikely to be incorporated into Windows 8. It looks like the Windows client team has had a change of heart. Dolby today announced that its Dolby Digital Plus technology would be part of the Windows 8 client releases. Dolby's Digital Plus is built into Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate, according to Dolby's Web site.

Samsung Launches Galaxy S III with Voice and Face Recognition

Samsung didn't name a U.S. wireless carrier or the price for the smartphone, but said the U.S. version will run over LTE and HSPA+, an indication it could run on AT&T's or T-Mobile's network. A white version of the Galaxy S III was unveiled by Samsung's president of mobile communications, J.K. Shin, at a crowded London media event that featured a live orchestra and was also webcast.

Microsoft to Drop Windows Live Branding with Windows 8

Microsoft's perpetually confusing Windows Live branding is about to get a long-overdue clean up. Microsoft is doing away with the Windows Live brand, according to a May 2 post on the Building Windows 8 blog. The Windows Live Essentials name for the collection of Windows add-ons - including Messenger, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, Live Mesh and Family Safety - is going away. Other Windows Live services which weren't part of Live Essentials - like Hotmail and SkyDrive - also are getting simpler names.

Cross-Platform Malware Exploits Java to Attack PCs and Macs

Security vendors have discovered a new piece of malware that attacks both PCs and Macs. It uses the same Java security vulnerability exploited by the Flashback malware that infected hundreds of thousands of Macs. While the attack vector is the same as in Flashback, this Java applet checks which OS it is running on and downloads suitable malware for it.
