Graffiti Artists Wanted for Windows 8 Digital Ads

It's Advertising Week 2012 in New York the week of October 1. Given the countdown is on to the Windows 8 launch on October 25, it's not too surprising the Softies will be attending this event in force and talking up Windows 8 as an advertiser's dream. Microsoft has been strategically placing graffiti-inspired Surface tablet ads on walls in various cities around the U.S. for the past few weeks. It looks like Microsoft plans to carry over the graffiti theme to the digital advertising side with Windows 8, as well, according to the Microsoft Advertising page for Advertising week.

You never really know what to expect when two of the bigger names in tech join forces and announce something fresh. Facebook users can now share their Dropbox-stored files from inside their Facebook groups. The two companies have partnered up to roll out the new integration. Soon, all users will have the Dropbox option in their groups. Now you can share notes with your study group, add the latest game schedule to your basketball team's group, or post a birthday video to your family's group at lightning speed from wherever you are.

Google Street View Goes Underwater

After having already surveyed ancient ruins and Arctic villages, Google's Street View team has now expanded their reach to the world's oceans. This week, the company added its first underwater panoramic images to Google Maps, giving users an intimate glimpse at coral reefs along the coasts of Australia, Hawaii, and the Philippines. Google gathered its underwater imagery as part of an ongoing collaboration with the Catlin Seaview Survey, a research initiative devoted to studying the world's coral reefs.

Chrome Browser Gets Tuned for Gaming

Google released a Chrome upgrade that improves how the browser renders 3D applications, including mouse-controlled games. The improvement comes via the inclusion of the Pointer Lock JavaScript API, commonly referred to as Mouse Lock. Now, 3D applications such as first-person games can allow users to control their perspective naturally with the mouse, without moving outside the window or bumping into the edge of their screen.

Apple Downgrading iCloud Storage on September 30

Apple is reminding users that their complimentary 20GB of extra storage from the MobileMe transition will be revoked on September 30. Through the years of its cloud-based offerings, Apple has steadily increased the storage level offerings for its users, allowing them more options for distributing storage for various account services including iDisk and e-mail. The storage level for a basic account peaked at 20GB for a free MobileMe account and could be split among its e-mail and iDisk services depending on what the user needed. With the transition to iCloud, Apple reassessed its storage offerings and introduced a new basic storage capacity of 5GB per user.

Adobe Unveils Edge Tools and Services

At its Create the Web event, Adobe unveiled an innovative set of tools and services to help designers and developers more easily create beautiful websites, digital content and mobile apps using the latest Web technologies, including HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. During the keynote session, hosted by chief technology officer Kevin Lynch, Adobe introduced Edge Tools & Services and announced immediate availability of Adobe Edge Animate 1.0, Adobe Edge Inspect 1.0 (formerly codenamed “Shadow”), Adobe PhoneGap Build 1.0, Adobe Edge Web Fonts and a preview of Adobe Edge Code. Adobe also demonstrated a sneak peek of Adobe Edge Reflow in anticipation of a preview release expected by the end of the year.

Microsoft made available for download on September 20 a Customer Technology Preview (CTP) test build of a first update to its SQL Server 2012, the latest version of its database. They also have made available a handful of service updates to their Windows Azure SQL Azure cloud database this week. Included among those features is SQL Server support for Linked Server and Distributed Queries against Windows Azure SQL Database.

Apple Releases OS X 10.7.5

In addition to firmware updates for MacBook systems and updates for iPhoto, Aperture, iOS, and Mountain Lion, Apple has issued security updates for both OS X Snow Leopard and Lion. The updates should be available via Software Update for systems running their respective operating systems, but they can also be downloaded from the Apple Support downloads pages. The security issues addressed by these updates include problems with Web sharing and DNS management services that could result in a denial-of-service attack on the system, and revocation of a compromised root certificate from TrustWave that could allow an attacker to intercept personal information.
