Maintaining Several Facebook Accounts
In previous articles, I mentioned that Facebook seemed fairly lenient about the creation of multiple accounts. This ability to create multiple accounts has changed. According to Facebook, maintaining multiple accounts, regardless of the purpose, now is a violation of Facebook's Terms of Use.
In other words, if you have a personal account, you cannot create a business account for any reason. But, you can create all the pages and social ads that you create from that personal account. Those Pages do not allow visitors to have access to your personal account, so you can feel safe there.
If you have multiple clients and you want to create business Pages and multiple ads for them at Facebook, you can manage all that from one account. But, you cannot designate separate credit cards for each campaign...they are all billed under one account.
In the case where a client wants you to create a Facebook Page, I would suggest to that client that they create a Facebook account themselves and allow you access to create the business Page for them. The client would need to have a tremendous amount of trust in you to do this, as you also would have access to their personal account. At the same time, the client can create a business account, which would allow you and that client to feel more comfortable about creating a business Page. But, with that action, the client could not create a personal page.
What a mess, eh?
According to Facebook, from the beginning without a Facebook account, you need to do the following:
To get started, you will need to first create a Facebook Social Ad or Page. To start this process, please click here. Once you've entered in the required information, you will be taken to the "Facebook Login" page and asked if you have a Facebook account. If you do not currently have a Facebook account, then at this point, please select "I do not have a Facebook account." You will then need to enter your email address and date of birth. Please be aware that managing multiple accounts is a serious violation of Facebook's Terms of Use. If we determine that an individual has more than one account, we reserve the right to terminate all of their accounts.
Remember – you can have a personal account and several Facebook Pages. That is not a violation of the Facebook policies. But, if you are trying to build a Facebook page for a client, you can get into a sticky mess that you may not be able to extricate yourself from in the future.
I do have one client that has a Facebook account with a Page. I have access to that Page, but when I'm logged in, I also have access to their personal account. Fortunately, they see their personal account as a 'business' account, too...one where they socialize with customers. On the Business Page, however, they keep their socializing to a minimum, offering instead the information that they only want the public at large to see...if that pubic ever stumbles onto that Facebook page, that is.
