What's New in Social Media
The changes that have occurred at Twitter, Facebook and Ning...and, she introduces a few more sites
It's been a few weeks since Linda talked about social media. In this article, she expounds on some of the changes that have occurred at Twitter, Facebook and Ning...and, she introduces a few more sites that may help you network with other designers, future clients and even your geeky neighbour.
Sites to Consider
- Google Buzz: When I first downloaded Google Buzz to my Gmail account, I was overwhelmed. Additionally, I felt violated to a certain extent until I could figure out how to eliminate my Tweets (or add them) and other information from this new social media tool. From what I understand, Google has a few things to iron out in Buzz; however, I'm also hearing that Buzz could be the "new" Friendfeed.
- Scribd: Use this site to quickly and easily turn nearly any file—including PDF, Word, PowerPoint and Excel—into a Web document and share it with the world. Scribd's intention is to break down barriers to the publishing process, making written works available to people on the Web and mobile devices, and most importantly, fuelling the conversations happening around them with social networking to boot.
- Meetup: Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. This site's mission is to pull social networking in to the local level, where real change might happen. Although not political, this site can be used for a variety of missions and community-building efforts in and around your local neighbourhood. Note this social media tool is not free.
Linda Goin
Linda Goin carries an A.A. in graphic design, a B.F.A. in visual communications with a minor in business and marketing and an M.A. in American History with a minor in the Reformation. While the latter degree doesn't seem to fit with the first two educational experiences, Linda used her 25-year design expertise on archaeological digs and in the study of material culture. Now she uses her education and experiences in social media experiments.
Accolades for her work include fifteen first-place Colorado Press Association awards, numerous fine art and graphic design awards, and interviews about content development with The Wall St. Journal, Chicago Tribune, Psychology Today, and L.A. Times.
