It's been a few weeks since Linda talked about social media. In this article, she expounds on some of the changes that have occurred at Twitter, Facebook and Ning...and, she introduces a few more sites that may help you network with other designers, future clients and even your geeky neighbour.
Do Not Miss...
Also new on Twitter is the location trend. Look down the right column on your Twitter home page, and you'll see this:
This 'trend' is a work in progress, but you can at least set your country if not your city or town at the moment. This trend will, eventually, enable Twitter users to learn more about what's happening locally, rather than nationally or internationally. This tool may prove invaluable for local Tweet-ups and more.
The new Facebook page had a few people rankled...enough to create a group that demanded that was demanding the old Facebook page. But, that group died quickly, as the new Facebook page actually seems easier to use. Rather than take up time here with the changes, I'll show you the new modifications and point you to the Facebook Help page for the new Facebook page.
The image above simply shows that it is easier to gain access to your bookmarks. The nice little addition is the birthday reminder at right – a great tool so you won't forget about a friend's upcoming celebration.
Other new tools include:
- Highlighted icons at top point out new requests, messages and notifications as they come in.
- The Account menu at top has links to important settings pages. It's also where you go to find help and log out. Yes, this is where you can log out.
- Basics like search, home and your profile are available at the top of every page.
- Core features like News Feed and Photos are right on top, making it easier to keep up with what's new.
- Applications you've bookmarked are higher on the page for easier access. Discover what your friends are using on the new Applications and Games pages, too.
- Friends Online provides quick links for chatting with your friends. To edit Chat options, click Facebook Chat on the bottom bar.
You can modify many of these items, especially the privacy factor, in your account and in your profile. That link takes you to an article that covers some privacy issues more in depth...be sure to pay attention to those features, otherwise you may find yourself in a compromising situation, depending upon the content in your Facebook page and how much of that page you show publicly.
Linda Goin
Linda Goin carries an A.A. in graphic design, a B.F.A. in visual communications with a minor in business and marketing and an M.A. in American History with a minor in the Reformation. While the latter degree doesn't seem to fit with the first two educational experiences, Linda used her 25-year design expertise on archaeological digs and in the study of material culture. Now she uses her education and experiences in social media experiments.
Accolades for her work include fifteen first-place Colorado Press Association awards, numerous fine art and graphic design awards, and interviews about content development with The Wall St. Journal, Chicago Tribune, Psychology Today, and L.A. Times.
