Michael Phelps' childhood and youth played a crucial role in his exceptional career. Here is an overview of this period of his life:

Childhood
Michael Fred Phelps II was born on June 30, 1985, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. He is the youngest of three children of Fred and Debbie Phelps. His parents separated when he was nine, and he was raised primarily by his mother, a public school teacher. Michael showed signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) early on, which sometimes made his behavior difficult to manage at school.

Swimming debut
Phelps began swimming at the age of seven, partly to channel his boundless energy and to learn water safety. His mother enrolled him in swimming lessons at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club (NBAC). His natural talent for swimming quickly emerged, and he began to distinguish himself in local competitions.

Training and Training
At the age of 11, Michael began training under Bob Bowman, a renowned NBAC coach. Bowman saw exceptional potential in Phelps and designed a rigorous training program to develop his skills. Under Bowman's tutelage, Michael Phelps improved his technique, endurance and strength.
