I have a grid on the page but the ID does now show - all it shows is recordsets.

Most probably you are using the UDE from the server behaviors panel.
In order to export a table with an ID, as described in the manual, you need to go to Tag Inspector > Behaviors.

Yes you are right. I think the manual should be a little clearer!
