I’ve been considering getting a parrot for my family, but I’m unsure which breed would fit us best. We’re pretty active but not home all day, so I’m worried about leaving a bird alone for too long. I’ve heard bigger parrots, like macaws or cockatoos, need attention, but I also want a friendly bird with kids. My cousin had a super sweet cockatiel, but is that the best option for a busy household? Any suggestions from people who’ve had parrots in similar situations? Replies

I get where you're coming from! It's a big decision. When looking into getting a parrot, I wanted one that would be social and family-friendly but didn't need constant supervision. I found some great advice on a site that specializes in hand-raised parrots. They had a section on albino African grey, which are super intelligent and bond well with families. They might be a good fit if you're looking for something interactive but not overwhelming.

It's great that you're considering a parrot for your family! Bigger parrots like macaws and cockatoos do need a lot of attention, so if you're away often, it might be tough on them. A cockatiel could be a better fit—they're friendly, good with kids, and don't require as much constant interaction. You might also look into species like green-cheek conures or budgies. They're social but more independent, so they can handle alone time better. Whatever you choose, ensure they get plenty of stimulation when you're around!
