Hey everyone,I'm setting up a backyard pond (about 500 gallons) and need advice on selecting the right pond pump. I’ve read that the pump should circulate the pond water at least once per hour, but I'm unsure which type or brand to go for. Should I get a submersible or external pump?
My pond will have some fish and a small waterfall. Any recommendations on reliable, energy-efficient models that can handle both filtration and water features? Also, any tips for maintaining pond pumps to ensure longevity?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey there,
For a 500-gallon pond, you're right about needing a pump that can circulate the water at least once per hour, so aim for a pump with a flow rate of around 500 GPH (gallons per hour). Given that you’ll have fish and a waterfall, I'd recommend going with submersible pond pumps. They’re easy to install, quieter, and ideal for smaller ponds like yours. Some good energy-efficient brands to consider are Laguna or Tetra Pond, both known for reliability and durability.
For maintenance, make sure to regularly clean the pump’s intake to avoid clogs, especially if you have fish. A pre-filter sponge can help reduce debris buildup, too.

If your pond is close to living spaces or relaxation areas, the noise level of the pump may be a concern. Submersible pumps are typically quieter than external pumps since they’re underwater, which muffles the sound. Be sure to check reviews or consult with your retailer on the noise output of a pump before purchasing.
