Free! - Beware of opening links in a new window
...and it opens (horrors!) in a new window.
I think the danger of losing visitors (content aside) far outweighs the alleged inconvenience of a new window. If lots of windows are open, I suggest the visitors should learn to "ALT + Tab."

While I understand any excess of links opening windows would be annoying for user and usability I am surprised by the dissuading tone of the article. I usually want links to open new windows especially when I open a link in the "links" section of a website so I still got the window of the first website open and I can jump back to it easily. It also dissociates clearly one website from another. I use it to differentiate content: e.g. an animation movie would have it's own window opened so it can be closed easily to see the main window again.

I'm all for external links in a new window.
Makes navigation much easier
.. about opening in a new window when you are using the target-"_blank" attribute. You'll have trouble with your javascript popups though!
