110Mbps SoftBank 4G Mobile Router

SoftBank's recently-launched AXGP 4G network is capable of speeds up to 110Mbps, but so far we've only seen the release of a 76Mbps mobile router. That's set to change at some point after September courtesy of the Ultra Wi-Fi 102HW, a Huawei-made router that SoftBank is calling the "fastest ever." It'll allow for theoretical maximum download speeds of 110Mbps and uploads of 10Mbps, and has a 3,000 mAh battery.

Facebook Hopes to Release Smartphone

Facebook is expanding its efforts to create a smartphone and aims to release one by next year, The New York Times reports. According to the Times, Facebook employees, engineers, and others familiar with the matter say that the company has added to the group working on the project, codenamed "Buffy," and that it has hired "more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the iPhone, and one who worked on the iPad."

Touchscreen laptops and tablets with the upcoming Windows 8 OS will be priced higher than their non-touchscreen counterparts. Dell will offer a full complement of Windows 8 products when Microsoft launches its new OS, CEO Michael Dell said during the company's quarterly earnings call. The touchscreen Windows 8 products will occupy higher price bands, which could mean higher profit margins for Dell.

In the shadow of a week filled with Facebook-related news, Microsoft has quietly launched its own social network that has been in development for almost a year. This social network, called So.cl, is said to help students connect with one another – a concept that early adopters of Facebook know well. However, it’s clear So.cl is not designed to compete with Facebook. Microsoft says So.cl  “is an experimental research project, developed by Microsoft’s FUSE Labs, focused on exploring the possibilities of social search for the purpose of learning."

Google to Close the Motorola Deal

Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility will finally close by Wednesday. Motorola Mobility announced in a Form-8K filed yesterday with the Securities and Exchange Commission that now that the Bureau of the Ministry of the Commerce of China has cleared Google's acquisition, the companies will finalize the transaction "within two business days." China announced on Saturday that it had approved the acquisition, making it the last major regulator to give the deal the green light. Both the U.S. Justice Department and European Union regulators approved the acquisition in February.
