Microsoft Unveils Windows 8 Pro Upgrade

It's known for a while that Microsoft is offering some upgrade promotions for its new OS, but the company has now said that it will be selling Windows 8 Pro upgrades online for $39.99. In stores, the price will be quite a bit higher: $69.99. The offer is eligible to anyone currently running any version of Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7; it will last until January 31st, 2013. That's the same time frame offered for the current $14.99 upgrade deal, but it applies to any current Windows users, not just those who purchase a new PC in the lead-up to Windows 8's launch.

Web Standards match 80% of Flash

Adobe Systems, retooling as fast as it can for a future of Web publishing and Web apps, sees the technology as mostly caught up to the Flash technology that Adobe previously preferred. I think it's close to 80 percent, Arno Gourdol, Adobe's senior director of Web platform and authoring, said in an interview during the Google I/O show here. Gourdol, who leads Adobe work to embrace Web standards, has a lot on the line as the company tries to make a difficult transition away from the widely used but fading Flash.

Google took the wraps off of Chrome for the iPhone and iPad, complete with the omnibar that allows for instant searches, pre-fetching pages, and swipe gestures to manage and close tabs, all on your iPhone or iPad. Hot on the heels of Chrome for Android coming out of beta, Chrome for the iPhone and iPad both sync bookmarks, history, open tabs, and even saved passwords for web pages with other instances of Chrome, including desktop and Android devices. Chrome for iOS also supports incognito mode for private browsing.

Google announces Compute Engine

Google launched Compute Engine Infrastructure as a Service in a bid to offer cloud infrastructure much like Amazon Web Services. However, the effort, which is in a “limited preview,” lacks the depth and options provided by Amazon. In a nutshell, Google is allowing users to spin up virtual machines. Coupled with Google’s App Engine, Google Apps and Drive the company is building out its cloud stack.

Microsoft reveals Windows 8 upgrades

Microsoft has shared with select partners some specifics about what those upgrading to Windows 8 can expect when moving from Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Users won’t be able to upgrade or keep their Windows settings, files or applications if doing a cross-language installation. (However, users will be able to keep personal files/data during a cross-language install by using Windows 8 Setup). Microsoft is also not allowing users interested in doing a cross-architecture — i.e., 32-bit to 64-bit — install to do so.

Android 4.1, aka Jelly Bean, gets a more responsive user interface, a much more interactactive notification system, better voice transcription, overhauled search, and a major new feature called Google Now that tries to anticipate what a person needs to know at any given moment. Android has exploded in popularity, but the OS takes a lot of heat for allegedly being an Apple iOS copycat. Google is clearly trying to vault over that issue with new features detailed at its at its Google I/O show.

Google Unveils Nexus 7 Tablet

The Nexus 7 tablet was unveiled yesterday at the Google I/O Conference. As previously reported, the device was built by Asus and comes with a 7-inch 1,280-by-800 HD display. According to Google, it's running the Tegra 3 processor and has a front-facing camera for video chatting. Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as Bluetooth and near-field communication support are also included in the device. Rumors had been swirling for months that Google would offer the tablet.

Microsoft Will Not Make Their Own Phones

Despite having manufactured its own tablet, Microsoft apparently will not be making self-branded Windows Phones. Greg Sullivan, senior marketing manager for Windows Phone, was asked by Information Week if the company had plans to develop its own cellphones. No, we do not, we have a strong ecosystem of partners that we are very satisfied with, Sullivan said.
