Microsoft Kicks Off Free Office 2013 Upgrades

Microsoft on Friday launched an Office upgrade offer that gives customers who purchase the current Office 2010 a free copy of the upcoming Office 2013. The deal, stuck with the official title of "Microsoft Office Pre-launch Offer," started Oct. 19 and ends April 30, 2013. Customers who buy a retail copy of Office 2010 for Windows or one of several stand-alone applications within that period can download a free copy of the corresponding version of Office 2013, or in some cases, choose a free one-year subscription to an Office 365 plan.

Google has added another layer of detail to its maps for desktop and mobile. Now, besides, streets, parks, and bodies of water, users can also see even more building footprints in major cities across the U.S. The Web giant debuted this new addition yesterday by adding 25 million new building footprints to its map platform. Cities include Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Mozilla launched the latest Aurora version of Firefox for Android and with this, the organization is also opening the Firefox Marketplace to early adopters and testers. The Firefox Marketplace is similar to the Google’s Web Store for Chrome. Users can browse the store to find mobile web apps and developers can showcase their web apps. These apps run in full-screen mode and can also be pinned to the home screen. Microsoft will finally launch a preview of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 in mid-November. With the Windows 8 launch less than two weeks away, Microsoft has obviously been focusing on the release of Internet Explorer 10 for its new operating system lately. Apple Sets Oct.23 Event

Apple just sent out invitations to a special event that it's holding next Tuesday, October 23, starting at 10 a.m. PT, presumably to unveil the much-rumored smaller iPad model. The tagline of the invite is "We've got a little more to show you," and the invitation shows the top of Apple's logo. Next week's iPad Mini event, which remains a rumor at this point, may be bring another Mini product along for the ride. Apple will also update its Mac Mini desktop computers, says Apple blog 9to5mac. Google Reigns in Search For September

Surprise, surprise, Google is still the king of search in the U.S. In fact, any other search engine pales in user numbers comparison. According to new data released by digital analytics company ComScore yesterday, 66.7 percent of users core searches in September were on Google, which is 0.3 percent higher than August. Trailing behind were Microsoft's search engines, which got 15.9 percent of the market share, and Yahoo came in third with 12.2 percent - which is down 0.6 percent from August.
