Yesterday, in a somewhat surprising move, Google announced that it would reduce the price of Cloud Storage by yet another 10%, resulting in a total price reduction of over 30% once you include the earlier cut.

Microsoft: 40 Million Windows 8 Licenses Sold

Tami Reller, chief marketing and financial officer for Windows, announced the number during her appearance at the Credit Suisse Annual Tech Conference. Microsoft had not released any sales figures for Windows 8 other than saying the company sold 4 million upgrade licenses of the operating system to those with previous versions of Windows during the first three days it was available. Microsoft launched Windows 8 commercially on October 26.

With the drop in pricing, Google is offering a new service called Durable Reduced Availability Storage, a service that allows people to store data at a lower price by limiting its availability.

Microsoft will support its Surface RT tablet with updates, including security patches, until April 2017, or nearly four-and-a-half years after its launch. Users running pirated copies of Windows 8 Pro can reportedly upgrade to a fully licensed and permanently activated version of the OS by simply installing a free Windows 8 Media Center upgrade offered by Microsoft. The relatively simple technique that essentially allows users to get Windows 8 Pro for free was described late Tuesday on Reddit by a user named noveleven who claims to have successfully tried it out. At least one other Reddit user confirmed that it works in the same discussion thread.

Firefox 17 Launches With New Social API

Mozilla just launched the latest stable version of Firefox. This release introduces Firefox’s new Social API with a preview of the first social integration with Facebook Messenger for Firefox. This was previously only available in the Firefox beta channel.
