Adobe Mends Security Holes in Flash, Reader, Acrobat

Security flaws in Adobe Flash, Reader, and Acrobat could have been the cause of computer crashes recently. The software company announced yesterday that it sent out updates for these three programs, which are meant to patch security vulnerabilities that cause such system crashes. The company wrote in a security bulletin that these updates address a vulnerability that could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.

Nvidia Announced Project Shield Gaming System

Nvidia has unveiled a new handheld gaming system called Project Shield. Project Shield is powered by the Tegra 4 processor and can play console-quality games while still providing a mobile experience. The processor is capable of pushing 4K resolution video over HDMI to external displays. It includes advanced sound processing that Nvidia said rivals Beats Audio-equipped laptops, and a 33Wh battery that provides five to ten hours of play time or 24 hours of HD video playback.

Nvidia Unveils Muscular Tegra 4 Quad-Core Chipset

At its CES press conference yesterday, Nvidia announced Tegra 4, its next-generation quad-core processor for tablets and smartphones. Nvidia based Tegra 4 on ARM's latest Cortex-A15 architecture, which means that its processing power will be dramatically faster than the current Tegra 3 quad-core chipset, which is based on ARM Cortex A-9. In addition to the new architecture, Nvidia's Tegra 4 system-on-a-chip contains a whopping 72 graphics cores - six times what's built into in Tegra 3. It also includes Nvidia's first 4G LTE modem.

Windows 8 Gains Market Share in December

Despite a mixed reaction to its arrival at the end of October, Windows 8 continued to grow in market share by the end of December 2012. New desktop market share numbers released by Net Applications show that Windows 8 jumped from 1.06 percent market share at the end of its first full month on the market to 1.77 percent by the end of December. That's a month-to-month jump of almost 60 percent. Note that these numbers include Windows 8 and Windows 8 on touch screens, but not Windows RT.

Windows Phone Is Lacking YouTube App

There’s no love lost between Microsoft and Google: The two have been feuding for more than a decade, with Microsoft regularly calling Google out for anti-competitive behavior in search. As AllThingsD pointed out yesterday, one issue that’s cropped up again is the lack of a Windows Phone app for YouTube. On Microsoft’s public policy blog, Microsoft VP & Deputy General Counsel Dave Heiner has an extensive post complaining about YouTube’s lack of support for its mobile platform, and how that affects its users.

Ubuntu Linux Enters the Smartphone Wars

Instead of going after both the tablet and smartphone with a newly-improved touch-enabled version of Ubuntu Linux, Canonical will be focusing its efforts in 2013 on smartphones. While the smartphone interface is clearly based on Ubuntu's Unity interface, it's not just the same old desktop shrunk down to a smartphone. According to Canonical, the smartphone Ubuntu will use all four edges of the screen for a more immersive experience. Ubuntu uniquely gives handset OEMs and mobile operators the ability to converge phone, PC and thin client into a single enterprise superphone.

Google Glass Development Charges Ahead

It's been six months since Google unveiled its Google Glass project, and it appears the tech giant is still hard at work ironing out the kinks to get the product ready for consumption. In an interview with IEEE Spectrum published yesterday, the head of the Google Glass project, Babak Parviz, said his team is continuing to try out new ideas and that both the software and hardware development is coming along.

Microsoft Issues Fix For IE Vulnerability

Microsoft issued a fix for a zero-day vulnerability in older versions of Internet Explorer that could allow attackers to gain control of Windows-based computers to host malicious Web sites. The company confirmed that it was investigating a remote code execution vulnerability in IE 6, IE 7, and IE 8 that could allow an attacker to use the corrupted PC to host a Web site designed to exploit the vulnerability with other users. Versions of the browser after IE 8 are unaffected.

Oracle to Stop Patching Java 6 in February 2013

Java 6 will be retired from security support in less than two months, and users and businesses should prepare now for its demise. Oracle will publicly patch Java 6 for the last time on Feb. 19, 2013. After that date, only enterprises with contract support plans will receive security updates, according to the Java support roadmap. That means consumers and most businesses should upgrade to Java 7 as soon as possible.
