Firefox 17 Launches With New Social API

Mozilla just launched the latest stable version of Firefox. This release introduces Firefox’s new Social API with a preview of the first social integration with Facebook Messenger for Firefox. This was previously only available in the Firefox beta channel. The Social API allows social services like Facebook, Twitter, blog networks or even news sites to easily add persistent social sidebars, toolbar notifications and chats to the browser, no matter which site a user is currently looking at.

Visa Officially Launches its Digital Wallet V.me

Visa has finally brought its digital wallet V.me out of beta. The company announced its move yesterday, saying that the official V.me launch accompanies deals Visa has signed with over 50 financial institutions that will support the platform. The financial institutions, including America First Credit Union, Capitol Federal Savings Bank, and others, combine to service over 55 million people, according to Visa. Visa has also signed up a host of online merchants, including 1-800-Flowers and Beach Camera, to support V.me.

MasterCard Puts Out Card with Display and Keypad

Next time you get a new card from your bank, don't be surprised if it has a keypad and an LCD on it. Meet MasterCard's new Display Card, which basically combines the usual credit/debit or ATM card with an authentication token. The authentication portion features a touch-sensitive keypad and LCD display - hence the name Display Card - for reflecting a one-time password (OTP).

Android Gains in Tablets, Apple Slows in Third Quarter

Analyst firm IDC said that Apple's tablet market share took a hit as consumers sat out the third quarter in anticipation of the iPad Mini. Android tablets made gains as a result. After a strong second quarter, Apple's unit shipment growth slowed in both consumer and commercial (including education) markets. Apple's share sank from 65.5 percent in the second quarter of 2012 to 50.4 percent in the third quarter. In the same period last year, Apple's market share was 59.7 percent.

Mozilla Opens Its Firefox For Android Marketplace

Mozilla launched the latest Aurora version of Firefox for Android and with this, the organization is also opening the Firefox Marketplace to early adopters and testers. The Firefox Marketplace is similar to the Google’s Web Store for Chrome. Users can browse the store to find mobile web apps and developers can showcase their web apps. These apps run in full-screen mode and can also be pinned to the home screen. Distant Orbit, Jauntly, Soundcloud and Twitter are among the first apps in the store, where all the apps are currently available for free.

YouTube Expands Original Programming Push to Europe

YouTube is cranking up its original programming effort with an international push that includes new channels in Europe. The video-sharing site announced it was adding 50 channels on top of the 100 it has introduced in the past year, along with the launch of country-specific channels in France, Germany, and Britain. Robert Kyncl, YouTube's global head of content, said in a company blog that from local cuisine, health and wellness and parenting to sports, music, comedy, animation and news, this new lineup of original channels would have something for everyone.

First Preview Release Of Firefox Metro

With the official launch of Windows 8 just around the corner, Mozilla unveiled its first preview release of Firefox Metro. The Metro version of Firefox, was “designed from the ground up for Windows 8 and already includes many of the usual Firefox tools and features. Despite the fact that this version is called “Firefox Metro,” this version runs in both the old-school Windows desktop environment and the Metro/Windows 8-style environment.

Oracle Finally Releases Pricing for Cloud Software

Oracle has finally answered a big question hovering over its emerging family of cloud services: What do they cost? While not giving a public price for every one of its cloud products, Oracle's website now has pricing for its on-demand database and Java development service, as well as for some applications. Pricing for the database service, which uses version 11g R2, starts at US$175 per month for one schema, 5GB of disk storage and 30GB of data transfer. A midtier option costs $900 per month with one schema, 20GB of storage and 120GB of data transfer.

Facebook Groups Gets Dropbox File-Sharing Option

You never really know what to expect when two of the bigger names in tech join forces and announce something fresh. Facebook users can now share their Dropbox-stored files from inside their Facebook groups. The two companies have partnered up to roll out the new integration. Soon, all users will have the Dropbox option in their groups. Now you can share notes with your study group, add the latest game schedule to your basketball team's group, or post a birthday video to your family's group at lightning speed from wherever you are.

Chrome Browser Gets Tuned for Gaming

Google released a Chrome upgrade that improves how the browser renders 3D applications, including mouse-controlled games. The improvement comes via the inclusion of the Pointer Lock JavaScript API, commonly referred to as Mouse Lock. Now, 3D applications such as first-person games can allow users to control their perspective naturally with the mouse, without moving outside the window or bumping into the edge of their screen.
