Selling e-docs securely

Securely selling e-documents via paypal or a merchant account, maybe by sending a key that will enable one download of a file upon confirmation of payment? As a magazine publisher, I would like a way to sell my product via download of a pdf file from my website (DMX 2004 and PHP/MySQL). There is currently no infrastructure to support payment. How do I go about setting this up in DMX and MySQL to sell a file download without simply sending a vanilla link to the document?

I would suggest using a table for a unique ID, for each purchase, which is updated before/as the order is made. That way you can email a link to download a Document, but when the page loads, it updates the event table, from say a status of 0 to 1, then the page will not load with details again.
