To my knowledge this is possible within flash files only. Although with HTML layers you can make a layer which is diplayed on top of everything else until the whole page has loaded. You can have an image on that layer saying to "be patient" or sth.
Hi there! I'm working on a JavaScript statusbar, which you could use to set a loading bar in your page befor it completely loads. It's almost finished, it's entirely done with JavaScript and it's (not so far, but I'm planning to do so) flexible in matters of images and status display.
