I first tried frames but found it was confusing but after seeing my friends site, i was determined to find a tutorial to tell me how to do it. i found it hard to find one. I managed to figure it out in the end, and now i want to share this knowlege in an easy to follow tutorial
FRAMES....The Basics
In this tutorial i will make a page with a top frame and a left side frame. It can be used for any type however.
- First create a new page. File-new-basic (html)
- Save and Name this file home.htm (this is just for tutorial sake)
- Make a new page
- Save and Name it topframe.htm
Add maybe some flash buttons or a heading. doesnt really matter this is just a test run.
You must remember however not to go down to far. The frame will not be half a page big.
Here you should think about what your color scheme for the site is. All one color or are different frames different colors. For the tutorial make this frame Black.Save - Make a new page
- Save and Name it leftframe.htm
Add some flash buttons maybe or something that you would put on the left frame. this is usually a navigation frame for site hypelinks.REMEMBER the left hand frame, like the top frame, will not be massive, so keep the width quite small Add a red backround Save- go to your home.htm page
- Add a Top frame, Add a left side Frame
- Click inside the topframe
- File-open in frame-topframe.htm
Is the page that you made in topframe.htm in the top frame. you may need to adjust the frame to fit it all in. - Click in side the left frame
- File-open in frame-leftframe.htm
Is the page that you made in leftframe.htm in the left frame. you may need to adjust the frame to fit it all in.
- Make a new page
Save and name it content.htm
Add some text like a website welcome note just some this that you will see when its added
Add a yellow backround
Save - Go back to home.htm
Click in the middle of the page. Not the top or left frame. This is in it self a frame also.
File-open in frame-content.htm
Did the page u just made appear inside that frame? If not but the frames did work, go back and review my steps!
Click in each of the frames and save (top left and middle (content))
Close all of the open pages
Flie-open-home.htm
This should now be the home page with frame and all of the content in the frames that you made.
If not check all of your other pages to make sure you have opened the right page, or have not named one of the pages incorrectly
The reason i used differnt colors for each background was simply so you can see each othe the different frames.
Heres a good trick to know. You have a page with different frames. Frames are like different webpages in one page. We made the top frame in a file called topfram.htm
- File-open-topfram.htm
- Now edit this slightly
- Save
- close the page
- File-open.home.htm
The top frame should now be changed to what you have jsut changed it to.
A good trick to know
There is lots more to learn, but this can be found out by your self. Things like border color and width ect.
As when i first started with Flash MX. Things can be achieved and found out by just messing.
Open a page and look for things you havn't used or use more advanced action scripting. You wont lose anything

Usability
RE: Usability
well yes their are issues but they can be useful to use and some people do want to use them. I am just providing a tutorial on how to get to grips with them to start with, as i found it hard to find a tutorial that was easy to follow untill i stubled on it by accident
But thanks for the comment

yea their a re many issues, whitch i did not realise at the time when trying to make frmaed sites, but this comes with practice and knowlege whitch is what web design is all about. Making site after site and learning things as you go. Frames can come is use though, and for a web design, its good to know that they are good for somethings
