Typed URLs Do Not Go Away
When use the "Clear History" option in Internet Explorer 6.0, the URLs typed during that sesion go away, but there are a couple of URLs that remain. Those two URLs also show up whenever I type the first letter of them, but they do not appear in the windows registry when I try the following:
- Click on Start, Run
- Type REGEDIT
-
Navigate to the following 2 keys by clicking on the little plus signs (in the left hand pane) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs
-
Delete whatever string contains the URL you want to erase.
I am wondering from where Windows is getting those two old typed URLs.

Typed URLs Do Not Go Away
A workaround to this problem
Hi
I faced the same problems as you mentioned in this forum and tried many options including the ones you mentioned. I don't have a solution as it is to remove the typed urls. However, I have a workaround to over come this problem.
I believe the history of typed urls are stored in the index.dat file under Temporary Internet Files (usually this folder comes under Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files ). You may be aware that windows restrict the users to delete this file or can we read the contents of it and modify it. But we can always re-direct the target folder of Temporary Internet Files to any other folder other than the one shown above. By doing so, windows recreates the index.dat in that folder and thus your old entries are removed from the system.
How to re-direct the destination folder?
Before you re-direct the location of Temporary Internet files, you must be aware that once you re-direct the location, the system will Log off causing all the open programs in your system to close. So make sure you have saved all information and preferably close all other windows other than the ones mentioned below.
Steps to follow:
1.Open Internet Explorer
2.Click on menu Tools -> Internet Options
3.In the General Tab, click on Settings button (under Temporary Internet files sub-header)
4. Note the Current location of Temporary Internet Files.
5. Click on Move Folder.
6. Select a folder which you believe could be used for this purpose like c:\temp and press Ok in all open windows / dialog-boxes.
Note: As mentioned earlier, Windows will Log off after this action.
Login once again and you can see that the typed urls are gone from your Internet Explorer.
Hope this works.
Thanks
