Google rolls out AMP for iOS
Should save users a combined 6.5 million hours this year, Google says
Google is finally bringing its Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) to the Google app for iOS, it announced Friday.
AMP, which has been in the works since October, rests on a diverse architecture that taps into Javascript, HTML and open source technologies. It delivers mobile-optimized content with minimal data requirements on mobile networks, and it should help Google compete with Facebook's Instant Articles.
Overall, the Google app for iOS is now faster, product management director Unni Narayanan wrote in a blog post.
"Each time you open the app or do a search, everything will load just a bit quicker," he said. "Whether you can notice the difference or not, these small improvements will save app users a combined 6.5 million hours this year."
Google also announced it's adding sports highlights to its Google Now cards.
