Google Kills Off Photovine And Other Slide Products
Photovine and other apps to be discontinued
Google Kills Off Slide Products
Photovine will join all other products made by the Slide team, save for Prizes.org. The other apps killed off include Pool Party, Disco, and Video Inbox. Almost all of the products were riffs on existing services, though they were all invite-only save for Photovine. Why were the services killed off so quickly? One explanation is that the CEO of Slide, Max Levchin has decided to leave Google. In a blog post, Slide says that “many of these products are no longer as active or haven’t caught on as we originally hoped.”
If you’ve used any of the services, Slide is working on ways to export your content. Slide.com will have the option to export your photos to a Picasa album, for example. Not sure what this means for Photovine, which will be losing it’s relatively new community. There are vines on the service begging Google not to close it down, but it’s doubtful that it will work. One thing’s for sure, the community is certainly passionate, however small it may be. I’m personally somewhat relieved that, though I liked the app, I never put much into it to be sad about losing.
