Now that you're steeped in social media, have you kept up with any changes or developments in the tools you're using to promote your design skills? In this article, Linda provides links to articles, tools and information that may help build your social media presence and help you to avoid some pitfalls.
MySpace
I have yet to write about MySpace, because I haven't found the time nor the inclination to use this social media platform. And, according to Nielsen, Facebook users have "largely upscale" profiles and are far more likely than MySpace members to also be part of LinkedIn, a social network focused on business and career connections (how much this comment depends upon Nielsen's partnership with Facebook is unknown).
MySpace also got another bad rap this past week as news spread about a Horrorcore fan, Richard Alden Samuel McCroskey III (also known as SykoSam), who used MySpace to meet a girl online. He met up with her and her girlfriend at a Horrorcore concert on September 12th, and went back to Virginia with them and with the girls' parents. He now is charged with the father's murder, and is a suspect in the slaying of the girl, that girl's friend and the girl's mother as well.
With that said, Rupert Murdoch said in July he wanted to reshape MySpace into an entertainment hub, and sources say the site now plans to launch a new video service sometime in the next several months with the help of sister site Hulu. And, just recently, MySpace launched two-way syncing with Twitter for U.S. users, something Facebook has shied away from to date.
Posterous
If you're into Posterous, then you might already know that this simple-to-use way to broadcast your blog posts has developed five new themes for users. Posterous also is allowing users to change their blog header and to custom modify any colors on their site. Future plans include widgets that will have their own open API so that anyone can write widgets that can then be embedded into Posterous users' blogs.
According to the Washington Post, the site will also be introducing more features that will gradually turn Posterous into a content platform. "Examples of this are the PostLocation block that Posterous added recently internally so that they could support GPS/Geocoded locations for posts."
Linda Goin
Linda Goin carries an A.A. in graphic design, a B.F.A. in visual communications with a minor in business and marketing and an M.A. in American History with a minor in the Reformation. While the latter degree doesn't seem to fit with the first two educational experiences, Linda used her 25-year design expertise on archaeological digs and in the study of material culture. Now she uses her education and experiences in social media experiments.
Accolades for her work include fifteen first-place Colorado Press Association awards, numerous fine art and graphic design awards, and interviews about content development with The Wall St. Journal, Chicago Tribune, Psychology Today, and L.A. Times.
