Elegant functionality

September 25, 2006 by Digital Design
We have been using the Flash Album Generator for about a year now and have finally upgraded some of our customers' galleries to the Dynamic version and absolutely LOVE the functionality and ease of use for our customers. Thank you so very much for releasing this extension! It works great tied into a simple Access-ASP dynamic gallery that we custom coded. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Keep up the great work!

Gallery works as advertised when set up properly

July 26, 2007 by Jim Hewitt

The documentation and tutorials provided are for the most part excellent, however there are a couple of issues that delayed my implementation. The the tutorial fails to mention setting security on the ASPNET worker account if you are using .NET for the image resizing component. This is documented elsewhere, but be sure to read the online documentation thoroughly and do the tutorial. Secondly, the admin portion of the gallery did not function over https://, at least on my server setup. An email to George Petrov quickly resolved the issue. Overall my impression of the customer support is that it is excellent. Given the great time difference between Bulgaria and Arizona, where I live, having a reply within 24 hours is appreciated.

My only complaint involves the parameter setup for Flash Album Generator, which is used in conjunction with Dynamic Flash Gallery, as well as the parameter setup for the gallery itself. Other extensions that I have used read the parameters so that if you run the extension a second time, the parameters appear in the dialog boxes. With this extension, you need to edit the xml or asp files that are generated to change parameters such as background color or gallery data path. Also it would be nice to be able to recall the parameters for the Flash Album Generator, modify them, and then have the option not to generate the images and thumbnails (since they may be fine the first time).

There are 2 improvements I would like to see:

  1. Have a hotkey that allows searching for a specific image by file name or caption, rather than having to scroll through them (my gallery has almost 400 images). This would then position the first thumbnail at the found image.
  2. Have a way to upload to a database record instead of XML. The search function should allow you then to specify a search field in the database.

I find the product an excellent way to add a visually appealing and powerful way to maintain images. This saved me several days of hand-rolling a gallery maintenance page. Having the ability to upload and automatically resize and create thumbnails of a given size limitation will save my client many hours of time, as previously he had to do all of this manually. The display of the gallery itself is also visually appealing, using Flash, much more so that using HTML.

Overall I would rate this combination of Dynamic Flash Gallery and Album Generator a 4 out of 5. Addition of the search function and database connectively would complete the product, in my opinion.

Jim, Thank you for your feedback. I have added your improvement requests into our bug-tracking system. And we will consider if they can be implemented in some of our future versions of the extension.

No Upload for Mac - No support

May 15, 2009 by Paul Braun

If your users have a Mac they will be angry that they cannot upload images.  This has been this way for a long time (+1 year) and there is no response or support from DMX zone.

Works as expected on a PC.

No upload for Mac & No Support to offer help.
