The quality of my thumbnails is poor

Answer:

You can set the size of your thumbnails by adjusting the Thumb Dimension field.

The thumbnails are made to fit the available space - so the thumbnail images can even display larger than they really are. This is usually fine if the physical dimensions of the thumbnails are high such as 150-200px - but it can get ugly when using thumbails that are scaled down to a low resolution such as 45px.
