Building AJAX image gallery Part II

Introduction

In the first article of the series Building AJAX image gallery –Part I we have created the basic functionality for our AJAX/PHP image gallery. In this iteration we will add some new feature and improve upon the basis established earlier.
Right now we can only load images with the dimensions no larger than our image viewer pane. We also have to manually create thumbnails for all the images beforehand and make sure they all have the same height, which is the height of the thumbnail browser pane. On top of that the whole thing is a little ... dull, so adding a little pizzas definitely wouldn’t hurt.

Note: Check also the DMXzone own CSS Image Gallery extension for amazing pure CSS galleries and slideshows with a fluent navigation and image transitions!

Overview

The fun part – IE CSS transitions

Let’s start from the dessert. Although there are a few people nowadays using Firefox and other browsers (including yours truly) 79% of the web population is still enslaved by the evil Internet Explorer. To make up for the “evil” part the un-secure IE is packed with features that other browsers are incapable of reproducing or only starting to implement (such as rich text editing in Firefox).  One of those features is the CSS transitions which have been around for ages and are unbelievably easy to apply. In fact they are so easy to apply that the feature has been terribly overused on many poorly designed web sites (remember the circle-in animation you are forced to view when you trying to leave a page?) That of course, some would say, is browser’s fault and not responsibility of the designer. As always I would disagree and be happy to utilize the feature in our application.
