I'm putting this here, cause other forums don't reply, other forums being M$ forums.I installed win2k pro today and noticed that NOTHING works anymore, I did the upgrade like M$ suggested cause it would keep my programs and everything, but everything is gone, the programs are still there, but nothing works, drivers, programs, everything stopped working and brings up errors, and to top it all off, i lost my thousands of emails too, how do i start repairing this mess, cause i'm lost.
i was advised against installing winNT by someone and he suggested i install this so i did in good faith, and now all my work is gone, as a result i'll miss my deadline that is set for coming wednesday, so i need to get this fixed NOW.
If it can't be restored with the proper settings then someone please someone explain how to get this piece of crap of my system again so i can continue building my websites.
Maybe George or Waldo can help ?
I built a tutorial like you suggested last night, but it's not finished yet and i wanted to finish that too, but it's impossible now, so i guess that means i once again kept working till 6am for nothing, oh well.
It took me almost an hour to get my Inet connection working, so getting the rest to work should take...a week ? two weeks maybe ?
Remind me never to install a Micro$oft product ever again, nothing but problems and support is non-existent, they don't even listen to your problem, they just have a list with known problems and give you a answer based on that, which ends up screwing up your system even more, support like that I can do without, i can delete dll's on my own and achieve the same effect.
I just want to continue with what i was doing, so if anyone can help me, then please do.
It's things like this that make me want to quit my job, before i get bitched at by my boss, but he refuses to see that everywhere I go for assistance within KPN i hit a brick wall, wait a day or two or fix it yourself, and others just tell you they will get in touch and never return your call, i'm ready to give up completely.
webdesign, computer animation, everything else, one more set back and i'll throw my system out of the window, i allready kicked it and almost destroyed my monitor when i saw that over 2 years of work is now gone.
Please help.
With kind regards,

firstly,
are all your applications win2k compatible?
if not start removing all of these theres no way you are going to get it to work.
i suggest a complete re-install <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

ok, so let me get this straight...
Some dude that works for Macromedia tells me it's ok to upgrade to win2k and now all my Macromedia programs, Flash, UDev, FW give errors and slow my system down to a crawl.
So you are telling me I should remove those...
NO, what it did on install is create 2 new user folders, 1 for all users and 1 for me, i think it wants the specific preferences in there, but how do i locate my old settings and transfer them ALL in the proper folders, so that they work again.
And why is MSN messenger the ONLY program that remembers who i am, all my other programs that loaded on started don't load anymore.
And i'm still running in 640*480 with 32 colors because for some reason my cd-rom's autoboot function is disabled and i can't find it, and running the Asus setup file gives a error, so i'm running the default AGP vid driver which sucks, I saved the report it created during setup, if you want i can show it to you so you can see how many things it wants me to install by hand.
Does someone know how to transfer my old preferences to this new environment that is based on the NT technology, cause i am NOT doing a new install, a new install means re-installing all my software, my 3d programs, my 5 different image processors, my music programs, my Macromedia products, my Inet programs, and there is many many others that stopped working, the most important one being my firewall which only tells me one thing: "Zonealarm Pro is trying to initialize the Truevector internet monitor on your computer. Cancel ?" and it has a cancel button, well there went my protection.
And where is the IIS that is supposed to be installed with this new OS, during setup i saw it create configuration for it, but where did it go, how can i start it up and how can i configure it, the Win2k help is really a laughing matter, it mentions nothing about the things i ask of it and the website, well, we all know what microsoft.com is like, TONS of information but it takes you weeks to find just one thing and their support guys haven't answered any of my mails yet, not in the 5 years that i'm on the internet.

Damn !
Very bad news...If I can't be of any help at least I'm sincerly sorry and sad for you. I got exactly the same, although I could not make the upgrade and was forced to format my hard disk...
So My first suggestion would be : I wonder if reinstalling Macromedia DW (on top of the previous install) will not repair some things amongst other.
Actually you may even be able to retrieve all of your site definition because DW stores them in the registry and the upgrade 98->2k should (yes should <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> keep them in good order.
But I suppose you've already tried this, didn't you ?
Well what does still work ? Do you still have access to your files independently ? Looks like you still have internt access ?
Couldn't you reinstall just the very urgent soft that you need to finish your job ?
I know my suggestion may seems silly, but if it can help.
Are you in possibility to make a backup of all your data ?
Have you looked at registry to look for specific key relative to Macromedia product ?
About IIS, it is not installed with Win2kPro. It comes win win2k Server. You may surely find it elsewhere, but all the win2k Pro I've seen doesn't included IIS
I wish you good luck<img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Thanks for your advice, everything i would do would be useless at this point, I first have to fix my "asus" videocard drivers, cause no program runs in 16 colours and that is all i can run at the moment, i tried all win2k Asus v7100 drivers and none work, one crashes and others just tell me that i don't have the right card, so it seems it'll be days before i can even try to get the MM programs to work, if i still want to that is.
Man, all my life i avoided Asus and now i was suckered into buying one and am stuck.
WAIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still have my old Creative blaster in my hardware closet, i'll try that instead.
People, stay away from Asus, it's nasty.
And that was said by a previous employer, a BIG computer re-seller.

I fixed the vidcard, a good thing i once worked for a computer company, i just had to find the equivalent for that function here in the win2000 menus, it's a mess, i have to forget where everything used to be.
I still get the error though:
This program is meant for windows 95 or windows 98. You must install a updated version.
Consult the upgrade report that was made by windows 2000 for more data.
Flash and Fireworks both work now, but UDev won't start, i can force it to open anyway but it pops up a can't file dll file MSVCP60.dll in given path very long path follows (3 lines in the popup !)
Back to the MM site for technotes, thanks for the help though.

Hi Dennis,
I'm so sorry to hear about your Win 2000 Pro installation troubles. I did a fresh install of Win 2000 Pro, so fortunately I did not have the same difficulties that you have had. I did have to make sure I had Win 2000 drivers for certain programs to work though. WIN 2000 Pro Installation first runs a compatibility check, so it should tell you which programs may have compatibility problems and suggests action to take. Did it do this check with your installation?
My husband upgraded from Win 98 to Win 2000 Pro and also had to make sure drivers were compatible. Microsoft has also released updates that make Win 2000 Pro compatible with popular software programs on their update site. After installing Win 2000 Pro, if you immediately go to their update site and apply all the updates perhaps your programs may run.
Also, IIS 5.0 is included with Win 2000 Pro, but it is not installed on default (unless you previously had PWS installed). To install it you have to go to: START>>>SETTINGS>>>CONTROL PANEL>>>ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS>>>ADD/REMOVE WINDOW COMPONENTS>>>CLICK THE CHECKBOX TO ADD IIS.
I may be posting this a bit late to be of any help. Please let us know if your problem resolves or is resolved. I know how frustrating computer problems can be, and to have these problems while staring at a work deadline makes them extremely stressful and frightening as well.
With warm regards and hope that your problems resolve soon,
Jean-Marie

The winblows problem is resolved, still have to re-install tons of programs though...
But i was able to finish the tutorial i was making, i overshot my deadline, but it is still not online, there's still 7 pages not filled, sometimes i wonder why we set deadlines, with luck it will be in the air around half august, it all depends on the Euro dudes, i'm not putting 3 pages with content and 7 pages without content online, NO way... Atleast it's not my fault, the content he gave me (4 or 5 word pages full) was on our test server in 5 minutes, hehe, i replied with a email that took 10 times as long to write. Screw them, i cc'd it to both our managers, in a sense i told them that if they all deliver content THAT slow then we will never get the best looking and most up-to-date website in our company, i can't do it all alone, i CAN do it all, but then we would have cool looking dynamic pages with outdated information and i refuse to do that. Some of it hasn't been updated since 1999...
Thanks to everyone who helped me out, with your help i was able to make the deadline, there was just another factor involved and that factor is going to witness how a 400 static page website will evolve into a complete new dynamic website in a matter of days, maybe then they will cooperate with their measly 7 pages of content and will get our general manager of my back.
I did have PWS installed when i started the upgrade, but had to manually install it anyway. Oh well, i guess there's always something...like today i got my adsl modem, stupid wanadoo guys just forgot to activate my adsl account, so i'm still using the slow cable connection <img src=../images/dwzone/forum/icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>
I don't understand, am I so different from everyone else ? I would be embarrased to death if i would give such lousy service as my isp's helpdesk does and it only seems to get worse, just like those Euro guys, i would jump at the chance to have a webmaster built me a cool site and being on top of his list, he would have the content within a week, instead the first time i had a meeting with them and arranged for their pages to be created was 2 months back, all their pages were there 2 days later, just like we agreed. The rest, well i really can't be bothered with the Euro project anymore, it's now become a matter of when I have time for you guys, you had 3 whole months, now the other 15 departments are up, just wait for your turn !
Hehe, pay no attention to me, i just needed to get that of my chest, i can't stand it when I work so hard to do what they want, even in weekends and in the evenings and i get 0 cooperation, that just p*sses me off.
