I am a UD newbie and am having problems because my server does not support asp pages so they told me to write in php. So I downloaded phakt-1.0.1 to write php pages but I am having problems setting up a connection to test the pages. I am running a W2K machine. I tried the PHAkT & MyODBC
tutorial and am still having problems. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could walk me through setting this up.

Thanks

Kim,

I suggest that you post a link to this question as a comment below the tutorial. This way the author will automatically receive a notification email to read your comment. Then point hi to this topic and give here a detailed description of what you can't get to work. That way you will have the biggest chance on a solution.
I don't know much about php so I am affraid I can't help you <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Kim, you emailed me directly instead of posting a comment to the page, and you didn't include ANY specifics to your problem at all.

As Waldo knows, I am always keen to help, but also I am not psychic.

To receive help, please help yourself and give a full and detailed description of your problem and post it to this board so that others may share any knowledge that can be gained.

Kim,

I defenitely have to agree with Tim. I want to make 2 points:

First of all, when you post your question as comment and handle things on this board instead of by private mail you will have a better change of receiving help: more people can see your problem so also more people might come with a solution. This will also be easier for our helping members like Tim... they already are very busy. Besides that all the information (the solution to your problem) remains at this site which also might help other people. So please keep discussion on this board as much as possible: it much more efficient for the people helping you. And because you want them to help you you will do this, I am sure.

Secondly: I already stated that people like Tim and me are very very busy. We get hundreds of emails each week from people asking for help. And most of the time we do give them that help, for free. But it is very frustrating to see that those people seeking for help don't try to help their helpers by giving as much information as possible. Even not after I asked you to do so <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle>. We also have a normal life and we need to make a living. So we can't afford to spend 100*10 minutes answering emails from people that have a problem but don't take the time to find a solution themselves.
I myself have only time to answer 20 questions a week, and I start answering those emails that give enough information... the mails that tell me that the sender really has tried to find a solution themself. The rest of the emails will have to wait.

The sad thing is that I know very skilled people that just don't give any support at all only just because of this behavior.

So please do what we ask you. We want to help you, but when we try to then don't ignore what we ask you to do to make our live easier. After all it's all meant to make your life easier.

I am sure now you understand what Tim and I mean. give it an other try please.

Absolutely no offence has been taken Kim !

I appreciate that you are new. Waldo and I (and many other developers here) are very keen to help whenever we can, which is why we are here ! <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

When you are able, post the error messages that your receive, and if possible give some more information about your setup. I know you are running IIS, but which Database System are you using ?

The database information (and the error messages) are extremely important, as different systems react differently. Hopefully though, the problem should be relatively easy to diagnose, and we can then get you up and running.

Take care, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

All the best

The URL prefix should be something along the lines of :-

localhost:8080/path/to/directory/

Where /path/to/directory/ is only completed if your site resides within a sub folder of the web server root.

Hope this helps

With this problem I would make sure of the following :-

1. That your DSN settings are correct.
2. That the filename is correct (and that you haven't moved the file to somewhere else).
3. That any applicable username and password are correctly filled in, not only in the DSN but also in the UltraDev connection.

I emailed Tim directly and I also want to post my message to this board to comply with the rules and more importantly, to help others that may have the same problem. My problem is with my Ultradev setup. I can't get Ultradev to talk to PostgreSQL. We're using Ultradev 4 on an NT4 SP6 workstation. Our linux 7.1 box has Apache 1.3, Postgres 7.0.3, and PHP 4.0. I've added ADODB and PHAkt to Ultradev, but it won't talk to PostgreSQL. When defining the connection, I've selected PostgreSQL7.x, but I get a "No suitable JDBC Driver found". The UDzone web site has a great tutorial on a MySQL setup, but I think it won't work if you use PostgreSql. I've installed the MySQL jdbc driver on Ultradev, but as I expected, it didn't work. Where can I get a PostgreSQL jdbc driver? I've installed a jdbc driver on my linux box when I installed PostgreSQL, but it was an .rpm, and I don't think that's what Ultradev is asking for. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

I do have a solution for you, but it invloves sending you a zip file containing the PostgreSQL ODBC driver. However, as I am in the office at the moment I don't have access to it. I will send it later along with instructions on how to use it.

However, if you can't wait you can get a hold of the driver from odbc.postgresql.org, and to install it follow the instructions as per setting up the MySQL ODBC Driver. Whilst there are some differences in appearance, the setup of both is virtually identical.
