I'm a first time user of DW CS3.
Built a simple page after defining site. Added Banner and Spry menu bar.
Did preview in browser.
Mozilla Firefox 2.0 o.k
IE 6.0 there's a gap between the banner and menu bar that doesn't show in firefox.

Any tips on how to avoid discrepancies like this?

There are lots of differences in the way IE and FF handle CSS, IMHO IE is always wrong - by being wrong MS makes us all do things to accommodate their crumby work and disadvantages everyone else.

However that doesn't solve the problem, I try to design pages so that these things don't show, my general method is like you to do my testing in FF then IE, also Opera all on PC, then have a look in FF and IE and Safari on my mac too, the new IE7 is a lot better than 6.

To work around some of these problems some people have extra bits in their CSS that stops some of the problems, or in more extreme cases a browser sniffer and then use different CSS depending on what browser is being used

I appreciate the feedback, but haven't yet found a workable solution. I found on Adobe a bug fix and update for Spry to 1.6 - that didn't make a difference. And have found various bulletins with coding suggestions, but so far nothing seems to be working. So going back and rebuilding.
The menu was working ok on it's own, but as soon as I used a layout template to arrange text that's when the menu went screwy in IE6.
