Here's one to get your teeth into....

I'm building a community site where each owner has their own personal mailbox. This isn't email - it's simply text stored in a MySQL Database and accessed via a PHP front end. In essence, users can receive 'mails' from other community members - but it's all done 'in-house' on PHP/MySQL.

What I want to do now is to have a user's mailbox actually mail them every time a new message is sent to their community mailbox (the MySQL one!) inviting them to return to the community and log in to check their messages. I know it's possible because I've received such messages myself - but I don't know how to actually implement it!

Over to you - any ideas?
