ftp permission error for image uploads

I have 7 image files that refuse to load to the remote - I double checked site defs, connect time, naming
size, made sure the image folder was in defs too etc. 1 was done in photshop 6 done in ai and photoshop all saved fpr web as jpgs. The page loads - the pics don't.
they show beautifully on desktop explorer - links work - but I can't even drag and drop them. I am at a loss.
Message is:
Images\contact_mapdata.jpg - error occurred - An FTP error occurred - cannot put contact_mapdata.jpg. Access Denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem.

tried using an ftp client like filezilla or even windows command line (remember to set type to binary)?
