Moving site files

Greetings!

About a year ago, I inherited a Dreamweaver site that has had practically zero site management ever performed on it. I think I've done more on that front than it had in prior years.

So what I have is a site that looks almost liek a flat file system. All sorts of files at the root level of the site. HTMl pages, their images and other resorces, etc.

I have been trying to impose some order on all of this, but my life would be far easier if I could just take all of the legacy code that's at the root level and stick it in a folder for future use and/or disposal.

Most of the files are not linked from the current version of the site, but I would like to preserve them for possible future inclusion in an archive site.

The site uses Dreamweaver check-in and check-out. I am using Dreamweaver 8 on a Mac.

I'm looking for advice as to what is the best course of action here. What I would like to do, but am unsure if it would work, is the move all of the files on the remote server thorugh DW, and then get the entire "new" site locally. I feel that moving them around on the local side would cause headaches.

I'd like to whittle it all down to a dozen or so folders. I'm not so concerned at this time about preserving any links, as I'll be re-working everything in the future.

Any advice appreciated!

Larry
