I apologise if this gets a bit rambling - I have no idea what has gone wrong so I thought i'd better give the whole story!I'd better start by explaining that I am not at all technical! I run very small group and the job has fallen to me to run the website (www.ghost-n-spectres.co.uk) partly because I'm the only one who can work a computer at all! I've managed to get the site up and running using Dreamweaver MX 2004 and its been working fine for over a year until the other day:
I was trying to alter our banner which was saved as ghostnspectres2. I saved the new version as ghostnspectres2.1, copied it into dreamweaver and tried to put the site. An error (I think it was an FTP error) was thrown up saying essentially that the programme didn't like the file. I pressed ok and dreamweaver put the site. When I refreshed through explorer the whole site was just a load of weird text! So I went back in to dreamweaver, changed the picture back and the website uploaded again ok, back to normal. I thought no more of it.
Until I tried to make some major changes to the site 2 days ago. I was adding some pictures, linking to some new pages etc. When I tried to connect I got the error "Deamweaver is unable to determine the remote server time..." I pressed ok and went to put site. This threw up a number of errors, some relating to the pictures I had added, so I cancelled putting the site, removed the picures and tried to upload again. Then I started getting the same error about server time when I connected and the error
message read "An FTP error occured - cannot put events.htm. Access denied. The file may not exist or there could be a permission problem." When I refreshed the site the events page was half empty and basically screwed up.
I have checked that I have "use passive FTP" selected as a lot of forums recommend.
Today I thought I'd try again, so I copied the stuff from the events page to a new page called Ghost Hunts and tried to upload. Now I am getting the same error but not for events, for Ghost Hunts.
The events page now seems to have uploaded ok but obviously the problem is not fixed as I am still getting an error message - I am now scared to update site again as I'm worried it might screw it up again and we are a very small buisness and can't afford to be offline!
I tried the method stated on this site in the tutorials: to backup dreamweaver.exe, to download HDD free Hex editor and to check for a folder called folder called XYIZNWSK but to be honest I have no idea what I am doing - I don't even know what an exe file really is (none of the files in my dreamweaver folder have to suffix .exe and the file I tried to check was apparently too large for the trial version of the HEX programme so I assue I'm trying the wrong one!
Sorry its such a long rambling post - I would be eternally obliged if anyone could shed any light on this - as I say I'm a novice so you might need to explain things quite simply.
