PHP display problem

I uploaded .php files via dreamweaver MX. However, whenever I view one of those pages in a browser, I don't see the design, text, and images. I only see the code.Can anyone give me an idea as to what is wrong?

I figured out that if I save all the .php files as .php4 files, then it works and I can see the design and not the code. But does anybody know why that is?
