Hi! Great Forum!
I am new to Dreamweaver and web development but have IT experience in other areas.

I am in the process of setting up a bespoke web blog using the Wordpress software. Wordpress uses css/php for 'styling' the 'themes' that you can apply to your blog.

I wanted to update my technical skills by creating a new 'theme' from scratch. Very nice!
I have been using Dreamweaver which my team at work are very keen on. I see why now. Very nice!

So far I have simply edited the php and css files locally in DW, then uploaded to the site using a separate ftp client. This works fine, but is a bit clumsy... I have then viewed the live site in various browsers to see the effects of my changes. (This way of working is only possible thanks to the fact that there are no visitors to the site, and the site is not critical in the least...

However I am having some graphics - layout problems and would like to be able to do a live data view as I develop.
Also, I'd like a more integrated development environment. As it is now, I am not using DW to anything near it's full potential - just as a fancier version of notepad. I really want to change this.

I have managed to connect DreamWeaver to my host, Dreamhost in California (I am in London).
I can synch my local development directory with my remote directory.
I can also connect in Dreamweaver to my MySQL server for the site.

I thought I'd be able to view live data after sorting out all that!

But when I try to view the live data for my index.php file , for instance, I get the following error message in Dreamweaver:

Live Data Error: An error occurred while requesting the document from the testing server.
Call to undefined function at ......... (It lists a long path and a function which normally executes fine.) It is executing from the right directory as far as I can see. The function is declared in another php file in the directory.

I can't think what the problem might be, but clearly I have not set this up right, or something else is wrong..
I am not sure how to troubleshoot this.

Any tips for me? I'd love to be able to use the Live Data view as I work...

All the best
Jo

Hi Jo,

This seems to be an issue for many people...after having used dreamweaver for years now I have just got used to working by refreshing in a browser. This is still the only true way you will see what you are getting. (always a good reason to buy yourself a second gfx card and a second screen!)

Probably not the answer you were looking for but my honest opinion.
