Funny you should ask for something like this, I was browsing the Developer Center over at adobe.com and found this great tutorial on how to create a custom forum.

Your welcome!
You know there are some pretty powerful open-source message boards that may help you grasp how a forum functions and yet allow you to tweak it too fit your needs. It may even give you some ideas on how to create your own custom forum.
phpBB is one I have used in the past and like a great deal.

Best of luck and have fun!
