firefox doesnt like dreamweavre default doctype

As a default using transitional to xhtml (as i understand semi rigid xhtml) when creating a new page my dreamwvr puts the following tags in at the top<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
"www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
these are not rendered correctly in firefox. What should I do, just removing them might be bad practise? but it solves this style sheet problems, and difference of display in i.e. and firefox.
