File Names "Unsecured"?? Is my Webhost full of it?

I've developed a pretty decent self-taught website, I think, and now the customer would like to move to a more robust host (as advised by their Tech Consultants). The issue now is that the site aci.dmans.com , a testing server that I've uploaded the site to, is coming up with lots of 404s that the webhost says are due to the filenames being "unsecured".
Here's an example: aci.dmans.com/lochinvar/CB-CW(E)-I&S.pdf . These filenames were inherited from the manufacturer's website and I didn't know enough at the time to even worry about renaming them.
The page that might be best to look at, if you can spare a minute, is aci.dmans.com/lochcf.htm click on the INSTALL/OPERATION/MAINT button.
Now, I've heard from another developer that this particular host may be the problem, that I shouldn't necessarily have to change the filenames, that this host may not be the right one for me – not with these filenames anyway. He says:
Yes sir. [ I have to change] All file names that are insecure, i.e. those with spaces, and other
non ISO web standard special characters, i.e. &, %, ^, etc. The dash "-" and the
underscore "_" are valid and can be part of a secure file name.
The server type is unix. You will want to transfer html in ascii mode and
graphics and other binary data in binary mode. Dream weaver should understand
a unix server type.
Once done with the changes, even if you decide to host somewhere else, you will
not be limited to either insecure or Microsoft servers. You should be able to run
anywhere without worry.
What are my options here? I’m seeing them as:
1) go through and find each of these files and re-name them and THEN go back into the FireWorks-developed inset menus that refer to these files and change each one of them to call the newly renamed files
2) Find another webhost that CAN handle the unsecured names
3) Try to find someone to hand this whole thing off to and lose face with the client, where one of my very good friends got me the opportunity in the first place…
I would like to think I could just find/replace all the filenames, but I’m a visual-only newbie and don’t know much about directly editing HTML.
Any recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated. I’m using MX Studio for development.
Thanks in advance!
