How to sort database records dynamically

I am totally new to database creation / php usage. To date, my site have been strictly static, however I would like to add dynamic content. I currently administer a website for a hockey league, and would like to know how to make it so that my statistics can be sorted by the viewer. In other words, I want to be able to update on the fly, if the user clicks on the heading points, so that the records are sorted by points. My intention is to have the fields of team, name, position, goals, assists, points, penalty minutes, and I would like to be able to have each field sortable.I have the php and MySQL on the server that I use.
Thanks for any help offered,
Duke
