I want to create two recordsets. Let's say the first one is file types, then I only want to second recordset to show what files there are that are associated with that particular file type. I know how this works in SQL, but I am having trouble in MX using an Access DB.

You can do this by selecting the fields you want to show.
1. create recordset and pict the fields you need
2. do your simple or advanced query
3 test if your query works if yes press ok.

4 from your binding panel , expand your recordset and click and drag to your page the items you want to display. or use the applications menu to create a dynamic table or insert, update, etc.
