Windows x64 IIS and DW 8
31 Oct 2005 23:01:50 Bob Scott posted:
Hi AllHas anybody got any experience of Windows XP Pro x64, Dreamweaver 8, ASP and Access working together. The software and hardware at my place of employment have just been upgraded !!! I've now got a dual Xeon with 4 Gb Ram.. Whooeeeee. BUT where DW worked just fine before. I can't get the pages to preview in a browser. The only page I get is "the page is not available and may have been moved". Has anybody set up this sort of system. Do I have to change settings in IIS. Do I have to have .NET beta 2 installed. I can't seem to find much about it on the net. It would be great to get some pointers. Theres a Google update going on and I have loads of work to do.
Thanks in advance

2nd person to mention google not working.
ok, no experience of x64, but you shouldn't need any .net stuff installed. and who wants to put a beta in their machine anyway }<img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>
is the site created in the wwwroot directory still? or was it removed with the upgrades.
and i'll have 2gb of that ram if you don't want it <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hi Dave
The whole disk was wiped and a clean install of evrything. So I wondered if it was an amd MDAC issue and downloaded 2.8... no joy. I'm getting "no provider can be found or no provider installed" errors. Really frustrating...
and so it goes on

if the disk was wiped, is the site still active? was it backed up and replaced? does it even exist?

Yup the site is restored and set up in DW . C:\inetpub etc. etc.. The non database pages display fine ! All is set up as it was when it was working on the old machine. I was wondering where there would be any info on x64 set ups for iis and MDAC. Been palying around in IIS manager but no success.

Windows XP Pro 64-bit uses IIS 6, which is a lot more secure than before, so you'll need to make some changes:

Back again - been looking into this myself a bit further Sarah and it seems that x64 doesn't support ODBC drivers for Access and the like, so this may be a non-starter. None of the driver packages from Microsoft will install on an XP Pro 64-bit machine.

Hi Richard
I think you are right ! Nothing will install for MS Access access. SO. gonna get a copy of Windows XP Pro 32 bit and see how we do. Are there any issues with this and a dual 64 bit Xeon system - that you know of ? I have to do this as all my web sites are MS Access based for ease of uploading lots of little databases created fromn various spread sheets.
Thanks for your posts.

You should be fine with a 32-bit operating system - I haven't explored the 64-bit side of things exhaustively but it looks like it will only support SQL Server.

Hi Richard
I think you are right. Looks like its a cut down version of 2003 x64 server. I also looked into XP Pro x32 and dual Xeons !! It does not support dual processors !!!! ARGHHHhhhhhh..... I just persuaded the boss to upgrade my hardware too.
SO
I'm gong to install VMware workstaion and see what happens with that. Intall XP Pro x32 up to SP2 and use that to test my sites before uploading. Looks like we'll all just have to wait until the y get the 64 bit dll's out into the world
OH WELL !!

Since installing windows x64 I've not been able to run any of my old sites that used Access as the database. I finally found the solution. It is possible to use Access as a databae with IIS on 64-bit Windows. You have to configure IIS to run the 32-bit of the .NET framework, which will give IIS access to the Access Jet drivers.
Its just a simple command line:
<b>cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1</b>
then reinstall the .NET framework:
<b>%SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i</b>
finally make sure that the 32-bit web service extension is enabled in IIS
This is for version 2.0 of .NET.
There is more information and other commands for the older 1.1 framework here:

Hope this helps somebody
