I've created buttons from graphics in Fireworks and then saved them as PNG files with other buttons in a menu. Later, when I open the PNG files, the buttons have all magically/tragically converted to bitmaps...

Is this NORMAL? What can I do about this - if anything?

never heard of this before. what version of fireworks are you using?

by default it will save as a .png, it's only the latest versions of fireworks that will let you 'save' as a .jpeg, .bmp etc.
you can 'export' to additional file types like .gif .bmp etc.

you 100% you didn't export them as bmp's to a different folder or something?

if all else fails and .bmp's is all you have left, then your stuck with them, unless you either make them again or re-convert them back to png, but this will not give you any editable areas back, it will still be a flattened image.
