I have extensively searched for a solution, and now resort to public begging in the hope of a solution.Dreamweaver 8 does not allow "design view" of a file with .spy (spyce server pages) or any file it deems to be mere code or text. Ive gone through the configs, the manuals etc.. Any suggestions will make sleepless nights a thing of the past.

I had the same problem and spend good number of hours but the solution came after I woke up the other day. Go to Edit->Preferences->File Types/Editors. The top column "Open in Code view" will have all those file extensions which will open in code view only. Remove the extension which you wish to open in Design view.
Enjoy Coding!!!!
