If you haven't noticed, DMXzone is running a member survey about our reactions to the idea of printed versions of E-Books (currently only digital), and the notion of a printed magazine of current premium articles available to subscribers. www.dmxzone.com/index.asp?TypeId=50

I'd like to remind people back in 2002 there was a magazine on the horizon (not from DMXzone directly) called MX Insite (site is gone now). DMXzone even has an old post on the announcement (dmxzone.com/ShowDetail.asp?NewsId=3114) with a discount offering at the time. Even Macromedia knew about it (www.markme.com/jd/archives/001745.cfm).

The MX Insite ring leader, I assume, Ray West (team Macromedia - www.macromedia.com/support/forums/team_macromedia/team_members/56.html) who has been a writer for Macromedia and CMX (CommunityMX - www.communitymx.com/us.cfm), so I assume articles were carried over to CMX subscribers. There are a few writers there who were on the MX Insite roster.

My early (excited) registration, of MX Insite, got me a discount for the first year of subscription. I wasn't always pleased with the content since I learned more online by the time the issues got released, but I was happy to see my Macromedia love that should've come monthly. It wasn't cheap either, I think around $40-60/yr... my Wired magazine costs me $12/yr for 12 issues. I ended up getting a total of 2-3 issues. As you guessed, 2-3 issues isn't a full 1-yr 12-issue, or quarterly 4-issue subscription. Then the news spilled about MX Insite not being able to continue. Sh#t, I would've taken a coupon for CMX subscription if the magazine was announcing its death to print, but nope - nothing.

So, for my ranting part... printed E-Books are cool for those who don't have a PocketPC/Tablet/Laptop, nor a LaserJet printer and print-on-demand has made small publishing easier. The idea of a printed magazine is a fun idea, but nothing more than that I feel. A magazine will consume more work for the staff here at DMXzone, and it has not been made clear to members that the staff has expanded from the core few. I have to jump in the customer boat and voice that I feel there needs to be additional coverage (additional staff) at a minimum for things like commercial extension support before I see more "fun stuff." Volunteers can only guide members so far, and it is not healthy for volunteers to reply to "help me or else" postings since we're not an official word on anything relating to fixes/workarounds/information. I'm glad we all have spell check, otherwise our articles may be buggy too, lol.

I love the fun stuff, surveys/polls are fun and harmless, but I (and others) would love to see more attention and more team presence from the official DMXzone cave. Hire at least one more person who is in-house. Court an intern or two from a local college/trade school - they want experience! Sites are storefronts, but we still like to "see" that there's employees roaming around, otherwise we get disenchanted and move on to the next store.
