(I haven't seen the article, but...) BBC, supposedly, reported that IE lost 1.8% more browser marketshare to other, namely Firefox.I am from the U.S. and love my Firefox, but I get the impression that North America/South America countries aren't accepting Firefox faster. When <i>Wired</i> magazine published a Firefox plug, Firefox jumped by millions in that week. Granted it was probably more "geeks, super surfers, and additional early adopters" and the IT/IS staff, but I still hear "I still love IE." That's crap...because IE is crap! *sigh*

Anyway, since DMXzone is a global community, I wondered what others thought of the FF (Firefox) revolution, the plausibility of IE7 and M$ talks about phasing (marketing) out the browser entirely for <i>Longhorn</i> 2007/2008. Even Apple's new OS X (10.4 - Tiger) has dashboard widgets that are mostly web-based - hence no browser to check weather, stocks, dictionary/theasarus terms, phone book, ebay...just to start.

i personally love Firefox, even tho it can be quite erratic at times with me.
i love the tabbed browsing, the extensions etc.. it makes browsing more easy and pleasurable. much more.
the dmxzone code is only really IE safe, which is a bummer. IE needs to be used to accomplish certain things on this site, another bummer.
i'd personally love all this web standards propoganda to turn its attention to 'browser standards' and make them utilise the same platforms so that we as developers and designers can embrace it 100% and not have to cut corners to accomodate other scenarios.
1.8% isnt exactly a big loss, i'd have expected a much larger group to have abandonded ship, but it seems most of the FF users aredoing so by word of mouth, i.e their friends saying 'hey IE sucks, try this it's great' (i'm one of them)
and if big bill does decide to scrap browsers in the future, it'll cause major setbacks in other areas of development for fututre microsoft products as they rely very heavily on web intergration etc.. so that could only be bad for M$ and good for the others. at least thats how i see it.
that's it, ive thought my way to silence <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

I agree with you there, it's perfect most the week and that one late-night and you have 32 tabs open and regret openning tab #33... <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> but that was 32 good tabs, IE would have been 32 windows! (yes, there's a tab IE extension, but IE is dead on my machine, except for testing)

I wonder when it'll reach critical-mass, when marketing execs go crazy with the terms (and invent a couple more that last 1-2years)?! haha.

Yes and no. Yes IE is a big pile of... but it integrates so nicely with windows and seems to run smoother and quicker (for me at least). FF takes a few seconds longer to boot up for me and my pc's are quite fast (around the 3ghz and 1gb mark). At the moment I'm making do with the problems FF has and that it causes me, but it more than makes up for that with its cool features.
So I'm now developing my sites and testing with FF as my primary browser and when I'm happy that I've got the CSS nailed properly then I'll fire up the site in IE. After a few minutes of laughter at how badly IE handles CSS I'll start to add the hacks to get IE to display things as they should be. I figure its better to create code that's clean and then add in the hacks rather than the other way around because when Mr Billy G does get round to fixing the issues with IE its gonna be waaay easier to remove those hacks than it is to redo all the CSS but properly this time!
At the moment though I'm hoping this competition will spur everyone into making better products that adhere to the standards and conventions so that designers and developers can concentrate on creating their sites and designs rather than fiddling about to make them appear similar on all browsers.

Ironic that after the hyped and publicised conversion to XHTML and CSS that DMXZone is still only IE compliant. <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
That's what I think anyway

yep, ran and worked better as html tables tbh.
be nice if they got 3/4 of us together and said we could do the forum re-design. the zones are a big place, with a lot of work for any overhaul.

However I'd be happy if they just asked what changes we'd like made and gave us some idea of what's going to happen. User Requirements?

However I've gone a bit off topic here - turning this into a rant about the forums!
I have heard talk that IE7 will be released before Longhorn but haven't really bothered to find out anything about it - if anyone's got something definite they'd care to share please let me know.

I have been tipped-off that new design was done in TopStylePro and should be full CSS/XHTML compliant.
Nice app that TopStylePro, but I luv my DW!

I heard that too - honestly, I think it's a marketing ploy. M$ got the axe to the head when they announced browser/security were only for Win2000/XP, and 98-Me are no good anymore...then the flood of hate mail and flamed forums/blogs. So, I'm not suprised if they want to release a IE7 before Long-Longhorn.
